Advocacy in Action | Help with Hospital Bill

A member received a very large bill from the hospital. The hospital was asking for a payment of over $39,000. The member was very concerned and contacted The Purple Card® to seek help in determining the amount truly owed and what should be paid to the hospital. The Patient Advocate checked into the hospital charges and learned the total hospital bill was over $125,000. She next checked to see how the insurance carrier processed the claim. She found out the member’s claim had been processed as an in-network claim. Once the insurance carrier paid their contracted or allowed amount to the facility, the member was only responsible for the amount applied to the member’s out of pocket maximum, or $478. The Patient Advocate contact the hospital to let them know this information and to discuss the billed amount. After the additional claim information was provided to the hospital, they adjusted the amount owed on the member’s account to $478. The member was very excited she did not owe the hospital $39,000. This is what the member had to say about the services received from The Purple Card®:

“Thank you so much for your work on this. Have a great weekend!”
